Notes The Joseph Stieglitz collection is one of the most venerable and renowned Judaica collections to have survived the Second World War. The antique dealer Joseph Stieglitz (1903-1990), once a purveyor to the royal Palace in Krakow, fled Poland in 1939, eventually reaching Palestine in 1945. Joseph's father, Abraham, managed to stow his precious Judaica collection during the war, ultimately bringing it to Palestine as well. Joseph Stieglitz opened a shop in Tel Aviv and for over 40 years he dealt in Jewish art, in addition to zealously enhancing his personal collection. Besides traditional Jewish religious articles, such as Torah crowns, Kiddush cups and spice boxes, Stieglitz was an avid connoisseur and expert of Jewish painting, such as the works of Jankel Adler, Issachar Ber Ryback, the Soyers, but particularly those of Maurycy and Leopold Gottlieb. The bulk of the collection was acquired by the Israel Museum in 1987 and is thoroughly documented in The Stieglitz Collection: Masterpieces of Jewish Art, by Chaya Benjamin, Jerusalem, Israel Museum, 1987.
The other part of the collection was inherited by his successors. The items in this auction were inherited by Stieglitz's daughter.
