Biography Anatoli (Lvovich) Kaplan (1902-1980) Russian Painter. Born in 1902 in Rogachev. Kaplan came to Petrograd at the age of 20, where he attended the Academy of Arts. Among his teachers were such well-known artists as A. Rylov and K. Petrov-Vodkin. His works depict the life and traditions of Jews in the Shtetl (villages in the Ukraine, with large Jewish populations). Kaplan preserved the world of his childhood in his paintings. He illustrated numerous books written by Jewish writers like Sholom Aleichm, Y.L. Perets and Mendele Moiher-Sforim, amongst others. I. Ehrenburg noted that Kaplan and his fellow-countryman Mark Chagall "share not only common memories, but also an awareness of the breath-taking wonder, of tragedy and a passionate love for life".
