Biography
Arieh Azene (1934-). Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1934. Immigrated to Israel in 1935. Lives and works in Jerusalem. Studies: Bezalel Academy of Art, Jerusalem, under the painters Aharon Avni and Vitkin; Grand Chaumiere, Paris; also studied under Zaritsky, Stematsky and Kiwe. Exhibitions: 1959: "Ofakim Hadashim"; 1962: his first solo exhibition in "220 Gallery" in Tel Aviv; 1975: Helena Rubinstein Pavillion, Tel Aviv Musueum; 1983: lived and worked in the Cite des Arts in Paris. Participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Israel and worldwide. His early works were influenced by Zaristsky, Stematsky and Streichman, and were mostly abstracts. Towards the 1980's his style changed and he created mostly realistic watercolors. His subject matter ranges from arabesque floor tiles to long views of the temple mount in Jerusalem or details of shadows falling across hidden portals or wrought iron gates, in a style from the academic realism to decorative abstraction.
