Bezalel (Lilic) Schatz (1912-1978). Painter and Sculptor. Son of Professor Boris Schatz, founder of the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem, and Dr. Olga Pavzner, an art critic. Born in Jerusalem, and involved in artistic creations from an early age. He studied art at the Bezalel School and later in the Academy in France. Married Louise Schatz, an important artist herself, and they lived in California, USA, until 1951, when they returned to Israel. He was a founding member of the Yad craft workshop. Bezalel Schatz participated in the Biennale in Venice in 1954, 1958; in the Triennale in Milan in 1954 (where he won a gold medal); and in Brussels in 1958. His paintings were widely exhibited in Israel, Europe and the USA and can be found in important private collections. Outstanding amongst his public works in Jerusalem are the gates at the entrance to the Presidents residence and the gate at Yad Vashem created together with the sculptor David Palombo.
