Biography
b. Prague, 21 July 1870; d. Berlin, 28 Sept 1932. German printmaker and painter of Czech origin. He came from an assimilated Jewish family and showed an early talent for drawing, studying in Munich from 1889 to 1891 at the private painting school of Heinrich Knirr (1862–1944) and from 1891 to 1893 at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, where he studied painting under Wilhelm Lindenschmitt (1829–95). As a draughtsman he took particular interest in the work of Jean-François Millet, Max Liebermann, Adolph Menzel and Wilhelm Leibl. At the Akademie he also took part in the printmaking classes of Johann Leonhard Raab (1825–99), where he experimented with aquatint and soft-ground etching. He made his first lithographs on a visit to Prague in 1895, and in 1896, again in Munich, where he contributed to the journal Jugend, he published his first woodcuts. (The Grove Dictionary of Art)
