Biography
Joseph Budko (1888-1940) Polish painter. Born in Plonsk, Poland in 1880. Immigrated to Israel in 1933. Studies: 1905 Fine Arts School, Vilna; from 1910 he studied engraving in Berlin,. Budko was a student of Herman Struk,, and followed his lead as he turned to graphic art. He worked mainly in graphics and book illustrations. He developed a style that combined personal attitude with Jewish mentality, a synthesis of Jewish tradition and modern artistic approach. He also revived the spirit of Jewish book illustration, elevating it to modern design. Teaching: From 1935 Bezalel, Jerusalem, which he re-organized and directed until his death in 1940.
