Biography
Zeev Raban (Ravitzki), b. 1890, Lodz, Poland. Immigrated 1912. Studies: 1905 Academy of Art, Munich; 1907 National Academy, Paris, with Prof. Marcier; from 1912 Bezalel, Jerusalem. Teaching: From 1914 Bezalel, headed the Repousse Department, taught anatomy and composition. 1911 Returned to Poland. 1912 Came to Jerusalem at invitation of Boris Schatz. 1923 founded Workshop for Industrial Art with Meir Gur-Arieh. 1923 Published book Song of Songs, which he designed. Prepared models for sculpture and metalwork for YMCA building, Jerusalem. Was a member of the Menorah Group. Exhibitions: 1910 Participated in international exhibition in Brussels; exhibited in Tower of David Exhibition; 1993 a retrospective exhibition was held on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the State of Israel; December, 1999 the friends of the Hebrew University exhibited his works to mark the new Millenium, as an outstanding artist of early Bezalel; 25/10/02 – 25/1/02, Museum Tel Aviv of Art, ‘Zeev Raban: Hebrew Symbolist’.
