Notes
Israel Zakhoder, originally from Berdichev, founded his business there in 1851, then until 1892 he worked in Moscow, and later to 1907 – in Kiev. After his death in 1907, his workshop marked items with “Heirs of I.E.Zahoder” “Наследники ИЕЗ”, which indicates the success of this workshop for a long period.
The container was probably commissioned especially as a wedding gift.
Berdichev was home to an important Jewish community in the 19th century and approximately 30 Jewish silversmiths.
