"There are number of canvases of 1916 and 1917 in which Malevich explored such effects of luminosity as the appear in the paintings that originate in color masses seen in the eye's visual field when stimulated by the sun. Supermatism (6|43), as it is titled on the back of the canvas is a fine example of this….This painting is a study in luminosities between very bright and very dark….The large dark oval plane would suggest the sun, the afterimage of which always turns black in the over-stimulated eye. its elliptical shape is caused by the head shifting downwards and the eye carrying with it an afterimage. The long vertically-inclined bar is linked to the smaller bars and planes in the bottom part of the composition, afterimages in the eye's visual field alternating between light and dark, red and blue, as the light changes. The high luminosity of the ground shifts between whitish pink to the soft yellows in a more feeble light."

Malevich showed 60 canvas in the "Moscow Kanve of Diamonds" in 1916, all grouped under one title "Supermatism of Painting". Only 4 of these 60 paintings have been identified, 3 of them from the 1915 exhibition "Last Futurist Exhibition of Paintings".
